Mustangs Win Opening Match of 2014

On the opening day of the 2014 NJCAA Men’s Soccer season the Mustangs of Western Wyoming and the Trojans of North Iowa Area squared off in the two programs first ever meeting.  It was a very hot and humid Thursday evening in Mason City Iowa with heat and humidity in the 80s.  The 2014 Mustangs started the match strong and possessed the ball well in the first 45 minutes.  Offensive chances were created by Landon Jacobsen, Brock Mosier, Riley Gibson and Andrew Newbold.  The Mustangs and the Trojans were unable to score in the first half and the half time score was 0 – 0.

The second half was full of goals.  The Mustangs started the scoring in the 53rd minute when Taylor Flitton sent a free kick into the NIACC penalty area that was redirected and scored, making the score 1 – 0 in favor of the Mustangs.  NIACC regrouped and scored the next two goals, scoring in the 63rd minute on a through ball and again in the 75th minute from a penalty kick.  The score was 2 – 1 in favor of the Trojans with under 15 minutes to play.  The Mustangs come out very attack minded and started to find space and areas to attack in the Trojan defense.  Carsen Tinker dribbled in the penalty area, was fouled and awarded a penalty kick.  Riley Gibson stepped up and scored the penalty kick in the 85th minute.  The momentum had swung in favor of the Mustangs and they quickly seized the opportunity as Riley Gibson intercepted the pass after the kick-off and dribbled to the heart of the NIACC defense.  He calmly passed to Andrew Newbold to his left.  Newbold buried the ball for the match winner in the 85th minute.  The Mustangs had scored two goals in 33 seconds to pull ahead and earn the victory, with the final score 3 - 2.  The come from behind victory brings the 2014 record to 1 – 0 – 0 after the first match.

Bryant Cox and Chandler Young both saw their first action of the 2014 season.  Kyle Mivshek and Carlos Gonzalez both played a half for the Mustangs as the keeper.
