Late Goals in Last Scrimmage Haunt Mustangs

On Saturday on a very hot turf field on the Westminster Campus the 2014 Mustangs played their second scrimmage in as many days.  Much like their first scrimmage the Mustangs struck early and took the lead in the 10th minute when Brock Mosier sent a ball into the Griffin 18 yard box which was calmly put away by Gunner Burrell. The play was very even in the first half and the half time score was WWCC 1 - Westminster 0.
Western's halftime adjustments were good and well executed by the players.  However as the Mustangs looked better on the pitch as a whole they good not find another goal and the wear and tear of the weekend and the two-a-day practices caught up to the young Mustangs.  Westminster found the back of the net in the 75th minute to tie the match after several Mustang defenders were caught stabbing at the ball.  Under five minutes later the Mustangs were called for a penalty as they fouled a Griffin in the box.  After the Westminster player scored the penalty the score was Westminster 2 and WWCC 1 with little time on the clock.  The final goal for the Griffins came when the Mustangs send all their players forward on a free kick in the last seconds of the match and the Griffins counter attacked and scored off of a deflection as the WWCC keeper Austin Pinter tried to clear the ball.  The final score was Westminster 3 and Western Wyoming 1.
