Spring Scrimmage Date #1 at Logan Utah

On Saturday in Logan UT the spring 2014 scrimmage season kicked off.  The Mustangs played first against the Weber State Wildcats.  The Mustangs looked nervous and sloppy on the ball throughout much of the first half.  Western had a few opportunities but were kept scoreless in the first half.  The Wildcats were able to sneak two goals past the Mustang keeper, Eric Walker, in the first 45 minutes for a 2 - 0 halftime lead.  The Mustangs made some great adjustments at the half and looked like an entirely different team.  Western got on the scoreboard first in the second half with a goal from Rico Mendez and an assist from Zach Plitt.  The goal was in the 60th minute and Western felt that they were right back in the match.  Sadly the Wildcats answered quickly off of a corner and built their lead to 3 to 1.  Weber State added another goal before the end of the match to secure a 4 to 1 victory.
The second match of the day was against the host Utah State Aggies.  Rico Mendez netted his second goal of the spring in the 3rd minute from a Vitor Nazareth assist.  The lead stuck for the rest of the half and the Mustangs went into the break with a 1 - 0 lead.  The Aggies played a little better in the second half and the Mustangs a little too confident which lead to the Mustangs conceding two goals and lose the lead 2 to 1.  Colton Cottrell switched from a center back to a forward with about 7 minutes in the match to try to find the equalizer.  His pressure helped as Tyler Trumble was fouled in the penalty box and Colton Cottrell nailed the penalty kick with 3 minutes to play.  The Mustangs almost stole a victory on the road when a Rico Mendez pass was kicked by Devian Kurete into the back post with seconds left in the match.  The match after 90 minutes ended in a tie.  For fun the two teams decided to go to penalty kicks, Eric Walker was the WWCC keeper.  The penalty kicks went for 9 rounds with USU converting on 8 of the kicks and WWCC only 7.  Kickers for Western were; Colton Cottrell, Devian Kurete, Brock Mosier, Vitor Nazareth, Chris Elizondo, Kyle Seljaas
